Jonathan Bourne, Jr. papers, 1883-1940.

Collection consists mainly of correspondence and case files. Incoming correspondence includes individual files for each major correspondent and folders for minor correspondents. Box 15 contains office files, campaign correspondence, and various business materials. Most of the outgoing correspondence is contained in the 61 letterpress volumes. Several of these contain letters of members of Bourne's staff, i.e. Herbert E. Thompson and Ida M. Arneson. The correspondence files contain detailed accounts of events in the political and business worlds of the time. Bourne's mining interests are intertwined with this material and include various mining company correspondents. (Bourne's mining interests and records comprise another collection, BX 187, the Bourne Mining papers). The Senate correspondence files deal with requests for federal appointments, presidential pardons, pension claims, etc. The Senate case files (1907-1910 and 1911-1913) contain material on topics ranging from problems with apple crops to management of Indian affairs. Five folders contain the 1912 (unsuccessful) campaign papers. The Senate appointment files include requests for appointment to federal jobs in Oregon, mainly post office jobs. The "Miscellany" section includes matter regarding legislative issues such as direct primaries, the intitiative and referendum process, political brochures, pamphlets, clippings, and speeches from Bourne's active political years. Some biographical material is included (Box 34). The miscellaneous volumes include the National Republican League cash book for 1911-1913 and 15 scrapbooks of news clippings. The one microfilm in Box 36 contains correspondence on Republican Party activities.

Jonathan Bourne was a native of New Bedford, Massachusetts and was educated at Harvard University. He came to Portland, Oregon in 1878 and practiced law for eight years. He became active in mine and real estate speculation and Republican politics. In 1885 and 1887 he was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives from Multnomah County, and from 1888 to 1892 a member of the Republican National Committee.
